The "Bling Bishop" of Germany

No surprise for me when I read the recently hot issue of Bishop Franz-Peter Tebartz-van Elst, a German Catholic bishop in hot waters for spending at least 31 million euros for a sparkling new bishop's palace complete with a conference room, 63-square-meter dining room and a 15,000-euro bathtub.Wow! This is one bishop with a very, very expensive taste at luxuries.

Then again, the church throughout its history has always been an institution that has over the centuries increasingly stuffed itself with the riches of the world. Probably the only thing unusual about this is that the bishop was so brazen enough to openly display his wealth, as to wealth, geez, the Vatican and the Catholic Church is as wealthy as any fortune 500 company, people just refuse to see it for what it is, a money-making, wealth accumulating tax-immune entity.
